Minimalism

I have always be in love with the idea of minimalism. I prefer design to be minimal. There has always been a certain charm of doing the best with least amount possible.

I prefer less to more.

Something that I have always admired is the people that live minimal lifestyles. The people that own just the things that they needed. No clutter. No fuss. Making use of the fewest things possible.

Unfortunately, while I may think of myself as a minimalist mentally, I am not in practice. I tend to let clutter come into my life and hang on for far too long. The urge to collect something comes about every now and then and I have to talk myself out of it every time. And I’m always better off because of it. Something has to be said for being able to pick up up and go at any notice, without having the anchor of “stuff” weighing you down.

The biggest antagonist to this movement for me is my strong consumer tendencies. I love to buy shit. I am a smart consumer, but I love spending money on stuff. And as much as I love having this stuff, I sometimes wonder if I could still be just as happy living with the fewest number of things possible in smaller home. Doing the one pair of denim for one year was a step in the right direction for preparing my mind for thinking and doing things more minimally. Not only was this about fashion, it was about having myself do something minimal for an entire year.

And so far, I haven’t been happier with how this project has turned out. It makes me curious how other parts of my life would be affected if I were to treat everything like I have my jeans.
